Hivos would like to congratulate Dr Dorothy Okello on being awarded the first Digital Woman of the Year prize. Dr Okello is the founder of WOUGNET – Women of Uganda Network – an NGO that aims to develop the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) among women as tools to share information and address women’s issues collectively.
Dr Okelllo beat other nominees from Ghana, Cameroon and Guinea for the inaugural award. All the nominees were recognised for their background in the digital studies, social, creative and leadership impact and for being digital ambassadors for all of Africa. However, Dr Okello was feted with the award as she distinguished herself for her work in increasing the participation of girls and women in the digital sector in Uganda.
Founded in 2000, WOUGNET activities are conducted under three programme areas: information sharing, networking, technical support, and gender & ICT Policy Advocacy.
Hivos has been in partnership with WOUGNET since 2004 and provides support to build the institutional capacity of the organisation.
