With Uganda grabbing the headlines for its strong anti-homosexual stance, the establishment of a regional presence of None on Record (NOR), could not come at a more interesting time.
None on Record is a digital media project that collects the stories of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) Africans from the African Continent and the diaspora. NOR’s mission is to document the hopes, struggles, challenges and joys of being an LGBTI African.
Established in 2006, the organisation has collected stories from over 250 LGBTI Africans. NOR is looking at expanding its presence and reach on the continent. As they set up shop in Nairobi, Kenya, NOR plans over the next two years to hold a number of multi-media training sessions and screenings with local LGBTI organisations. The aim is to enable these organisations to document stories of their members and create media-centered advocacy projects.
Since the 1990s, Hivos has been closely involved in the emancipation of sexual minorities out of the belief that self-determination and diversity also apply to sexuality and lifestyle, and we are particularly focused on LGBT activism in developing countries. Despite the vibrant media landscape that exists in the region, the portrayal of the homosexual community in Africa leaves much to be desired. Hivos decided to partner with NOR until the end of December 2014 because we believe their work will put straight the many misconceptions and prejudices that exist.
