About Hivos

Hivos seeks new and creative solutions to persistent global problems; solutions created by people taking their lives into their own hands. We offer a positive counterbalancing force against discrimination, inequality, abuse of power and the unsustainable use of our planet’s resources. Our mission is to innovate for social change. With smart projects in the right places, we work towards more open and green societies.

About Green and Inclusive Energy program

The Green and Inclusive Energy program is Hivos’ five-year strategic partnership with the Dutch government and together with ENERGIA and International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), launched at the beginning of 2016 to help remedy this situation. The program focuses on lobby and advocacy that will influence the debate on energy, with the ultimate aim of making energy systems more green and inclusive (of women, children and the marginalised). The programme, similarly, mobilises local civil society to execute their own effective lobby strategies.

The overall objective of the program is to help transition the energy system in East Africa to one that is green and inclusive and which meets the energy needs of women and men in their daily lives. It envisions a green and inclusive energy system that creates economic opportunities and growth whilst mitigating climate change.

Assignment

This research aims to understand the status of renewable energy in the county of Makueni county and will focus on household energy use, and energy policy.

It will investigate energy situation with regard to the type of power produced and distribution of energy in rural/urban/peri urban areas, the number of people who have /don’t have access to electricity and to clean cooking, what type of energy they use and what they pay, level of on/off-grid energy and reasons for energy choice. In addition, the study will develop a county geospatial database for the following basic social services: health, education, rural roads, electricity, telecommunications, financial services, sanitation, and community services for women. The database will have several capabilities (query, update, mapping, viewing, data retrieval, and so on). This research will also aim at analyzing the impact of COVID 19 to the use and uptake of renewable energy sources.

The researcher will be expected to handle all aspects of the research including survey design, data collection, finalisation of research text, and policy briefs.
